YMMV, but in practice — Zigbee works great with my setup.
automation_fan: Totally agree — I had the same issue and got it working by reconfiguring the hub. Took me longer than expected that parameter.

Honestly, I'd choose Home Assistant over Vera for your case. Keep in mind the tradeoff.
